Only weeks away from the Waikoloa Village Association annual meeting, April 9. Homeowners in this community of 3,000-plus units are faced with filling three vacant slots on the board of directors. The most recent decision of the board concerns two costly proposals for swimming pool renovation to the tune of $2 to $3 million, as advertised in the latest voting package.
We need to vote no on the board’s proposal asking members to approve a bank loan secured with the association’s assets to finance this costly pool renovation, to be paid for with forced contributions, from WVA property owners. As for the latest swimming pool renovation plan, an accounting and engineering assessment needs to be done before any kind of a price tag can be applied. Using an “educated guess” to set renovation costs is fiscally dangerous. More importantly, there may exist a doable, viable and affordable engineering solution to repair the current pool. Until a request for proposal (RFP) is solicited, a potential less costly engineering solution is not being shared with the Waikoloa Village property owners.
Homeowners in this community of 3,000-plus households are made up mostly of retirees on fixed incomes and hard working folks who appreciate the uniqueness of our location and tight knit community. We do not want to expand with expensive projects that would make us “Waikoloa City” and not Waikoloa Village. Projects like hiking trails, fitness center, Olympic size swimming pool, etc., are not wanted here and are certainly not affordable.
In addition to the programmed one-time special assessment of $665 for Pool Design 1, or $985 for Pool Design 2 that will be enforced, if members vote for either one of these two pool options, annual homeowner dues are going to increase again due to continuous expensive recurring maintenance of the renovated pool! In addition to the special assessments of $665 or $985, new annual dues will be $673 for Design 1 or $798 for Design 2.
Please, if you are a property owner of the Waikoloa Village Association, the meeting is a must attend at Waikoloa Middle School, sign in 9:30 a.m., meeting begins at 10 a.m.
