KAILUA-KONA — I can read to my dog while I sit on a log. I can read to my cat while I wear my hat. I can read to you, you can read to me. We can read together sitting under a tree.
Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program held every March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. The Hawaii Island Humane Society celebrated the event Wednesday with its Tales with Tails program at the Kona Shelter.
Launched last July, the program was designed to help children improve their reading skills while helping shelter animals by providing socialization and human interaction. Children were invited with their parents to read to dogs and cats available for adoption at the shelter.
