KAILUA-KONA — Another day passed Friday with no new confirmed cases of dengue fever on the Big Island, according to the state Department of Health.
State health officials said Friday that no new cases have been confirmed on the island since Feb. 24 leaving the total case count at 260. Of the confirmed cases, 235 are Hawaii Island residents and 25 are visitors; 46 have been children.
Health officials, since the start of the outbreak in September, have excluded 1,391 potential cases based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria. Based on that figure, 15.7 percent of potential cases have been confirmed as dengue fever.
“Although the number and frequency of new confirmed cases appears to be on the decline, the outbreak is not anticipated to be considered over anytime in the near future. Therefore we need everyone’s help to continue to Fight the Bite,” Hawaii County Civil Defense said.
