Five Parker students advance to state science fair

Twelve students from Parker Middle School had an impressive showing at the 2016 Hawaii District Science and Engineering Fair Feb. 13 in Hilo. All participating Parker students received an award of merit, with 10 earning monetary awards and five advancing to the state science.

Highlights of the district competition included Kai Griley, grade 6, who received top honors in the Best in Subject Category for mathematics, with his project titled “Visual Vibrations.” Halia Buchal and Hiroki Soler, both in grade 8, walked away with the Best in Subject Category award for environment science with their project titled “Filtering water with Moringa Particles.” Buchal and Soler also received fourth place in The Robert M. and Alice K. Fujimoto Foundation Award for the overall Junior Research Division, which is the Best in Show category with more than 100 participants.

Buchal, Teo Ippolito, Del Jordan, Benjamin Kubo and Soler will advance to the state science fair on Oahu March 28-30.
