Events are planned at Kawaihae to celebrate the arrival of the Hawaiian voyaging canoe, Hikianalia.
The Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday at Pua Ka Ilima, Kawaihae coral flats. A Hui Hou Hikianalia, an informal potluck celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 12 at Kawaihae Harbor.
The events are oganized by Ohana Waa. Reservations are not required.

VFW events announced
VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events.
A pasta dinner with salad and desert will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday for $5. The Korean War Vets will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the VFW at 11:30. The second annual Play with a Vet golf tournament will be held May 21 at Kona Country Club.

Kona Interfaith Meditation Society meets
The Kona Interfaith Meditation Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St.
The program will include the next part of a multi-part video entitled “Jesus and Buddha: Paths to Awakening.” There will also be discussion, a period of silence and refreshments.

IHOP opens in Kailua-Kona
IHOP Hawaii will celebrate the grand opening of its second Hawaii Island restaurant on Tuesday, just in time for National Pancake Day. The restaurant is in Lanihau Center on Palani Road.
IHOP Kona marks the fifth restaurant in the IHOP Hawaii franchise.
Foxworthy named Officer of the Month
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Officer Jason Foxworthy as Officer of the Month for March during a luncheon ceremony Wednesday at Huggo’s restaurant.
Foxworthy was honored for an investigation into an auto theft. On Jan. 16, Foxworthy and a recruit he was training, Officer Dayson Taniguchi, were assigned to a vehicle theft at a shopping center in Kona. Through interviews of possible witnesses, they identified a suspect. When they found the suspect, he had drug paraphernalia and brass knuckles in his possession. After his arrest, detectives recovered the stolen vehicle along with 2.4 grams of crystal methamphetamine.
Also in January, Foxworthy and Taniguchi investigated 36 incidents, three traffic accidents and 50 miscellaneous public complaints. They made 14 adult arrests and issued 57 traffic citations.
Foxworthy was previously named Officer of the Month in February 2012, July 2012 and June 2014. As Officer of the Month, he is eligible for Officer of the Year.
