People at the Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel saw what many feared was a drowning, but was a straightforward rescue.

A surfer got into trouble about 2 p.m. Thursday while off Huggo’s On the Rocks, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros.

A lifeguard responded and took the person out beyond the breaks. There the surfer was transferred to a rescue boat and taken to the beach between the Kailua Pier and the hotel’s property.

The person was unloaded and treated, Medeiros said, and suffered no injuries in the incident. Units departed the area at 3:10 p.m., he said, and the person did not require transport to the hospital.
