A high surf warning remains posted for north- and west-facing shores of the Big Island through Friday afternoon.
The National Weather Service says a very large northwest swell continues to produce 8- to 12-foot waves along west-facing shores of the Kona and Kohala coasts and 20- to 25-foot waves along north-facing shores of the northern and eastern coasts. The warning remains posted until 6 p.m.
The service categorized the warning-level surf’s impact as “extreme,” cautioning the public to expect ocean water surging over the shoreline creating the potential for significant damage to coastal properties and roadways. Large breaking waves may also affect harbor entrances and channels.
