In this book, Jamal lives with his grandmother in the inner city of Dallas. With the encouragement of his grandmother, Jamal applies to the Pathways Project to spend the summer before he enters eighth grade with a family in a rural area. Jamal is selected and is sent to stay on a cattle ranch in Clayton Springs where instead of a host family, his host is Jake Litchfield a bachelor in his 30s. Jamal takes to this rural setting learning ranch life and making many friends. He and Jake become close and Jamal hopes to return next summer even though that is not part of the Pathways program.
All of this is put in jeopardy when a friend from Dallas shows up at the ranch. Because of his actions, Jamal thinks he will be thrown out of the Pathways Project and that he has lost Jake’s trust and friendship.
