Officer of the Month luncheon planned
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Jason Foxworthy as the “Officer of the Month” during a luncheon at noon Wednesday for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department. The guest speakers will be Chelsea LaFrance, case manager and Zahera Knowles, executive director West Hawaii Mediation.
The public is invited. Cost is $20, all inclusive at the Huggo’s restaurant. Reservations are required by Monday and may be made by contacting Liz Holey, lholey@hawaii.rr.com, 443-7708.
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports our police department in their efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by our Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.
Kona Amateur Radio Society meets
The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. All members, friends, and those interested in HAM radio are invited. Attendees should bring a dish to share during the Cajun themed potluck.
The group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Mauna Loa volcano talk planned
The monthly Tech Pau Hana has changed its name to Kona Science Cafe. The next presentation, “Watching Mauna Loa Shake,” will be at 5 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Visitor Center.
Hawaii Volcano Observatory geophysicist Paul Okubo will discuss the current seismic state of Mauna Loa, as well as seismological observations that HVO has keyed on in the past to issue eruption forecasts. Paul Okubo, research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaii Volcano Observatory, will discuss seismological processes related to active volcanism.
A potluck will also be held. Attendees should bring pupu and non-alcoholic beverages to share. All are welcome and admission is free.

Elks celebrate 148th birthday
The founding of the first Elks Lodge was in February, 1868. Kona Elks will celebrate this event Saturday with a dinner of country and western style barbecue Texas smoked brisket, salads, side dishes and desserts. The event will also include dancing to live music by Bill Brooks’ Full House Band. Music is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $25. For those who come for entertainment only, there is a $10 cover charge.

Hospital board names Sayre as chairman
The Hawaii Health Systems Corporation West Hawaii Region board of directors elected Frank Sayre as its new chairman. The West Hawaii Region is comprised of Kona Community Hospital and Kohala Hospital.
Sayre, who joined the West Hawaii Region board in July 2014, is a retired dentist. He was previously a member of the Kona Community Hospital surgical staff as well as HHSC’s Management Advisory Committee for West Hawaii. Sayre has a long history of community commitment and is a volunteer board member on the Daniel Sayre Memorial Foundation, Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH) and the Puu Waa Waa Advisory Council.
Snydar makes dean’s list
Trisha Snydar, granddaughter of Elizabeth Rychlik and Gary Lyshol of Kona, was named to Pacific University’s dean’s list for the fall semester of 2015. Trishas GPA was 3.9. Only 18.2 percent of Pacific’s student qualify for this honor.
Family members may join VFW
Spouses and siblings of Veterans of Foreign Wars members can join the oldest and largest veterans organization.
