Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Feb. 15 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Feb. 15 and Sunday. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Puna officers arrested nine drivers while Kona officers arrested eight and South Hilo officers four, according to the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists and Hamakua and Ka’u officers arrested one driver in each district.
So far this year, there have been 155 DUI arrests compared with 133 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.5 percent.
There have been 183 major accidents so far this year compared with 199 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes on Hawaii Island public roadways, resulting in two fatalities compared with two fatal crashes resulting in four fatalities during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatalities.
