HONOLULU (AP) — Officials are holding a public meeting about a project that aims to repair or replace a crucial groin in Waikiki.

They say the Royal Hawaiian groin between the Waikiki Sheraton and the Royal Hawaiian hotels is in an extremely deteriorated condition. If it fails, officials say more than 1,700 feet of sandy shoreline located east of the groin in the heart of Waikiki could be destabilized.

They’re considering replacing the groin, repairing it or building a new concrete wall.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources and Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District will hold the meeting Tuesday night. It will be held in the Waikiki Community Center.
