Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union is accepting scholarship applications from Hawaii Island high school seniors.
The credit union will award $17,500 in scholarships to high school seniors graduating in 2016. Seven scholarships — each in the amount of $2,500 — are named after a volunteer or leader who made important contributions to Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union.
The Peter Hirata Scholarship, Albert Akana Scholarship, Katsumasa Tomita Scholarship, Frank Ishii Scholarship, and Mitsugi Inaba scholarship are awarded to students based on need, academic achievement, career goals and extracurricular activities. The John Y. Iwane scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who meets all the criteria mentioned above with plans to enter an agriculture-related field of study. The Michael Asam Scholarship will be awarded to a senior who actively participates in an HCFCU sponsored student credit union as a teller or as a student credit union board member.
Students don’t need be a member of Hawaii Community FCU to apply. Each applicant must plan to attend a two- or four-year institution of higher learning.

P.E.O. luncheon planned
The local chapter of P.E.O. will hold a no-host luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Daylight Mind Restaurant in Kailua-Kona. All P.E.O. members and their guests are invited.
P.E.O. is an international women’s organization supporting women’s education through loans, grants and scholarships.

Public electric car charging station in North Kohala
An electric vehicle charging station will be available for public use in the Hawaii Palm Properties office carport at 54-3848 Akoni Pule Highway, Kapaau.
“This is a great service for the island, enabling people from other districts to come experience beautiful Kohala,” Elaine Christianson, Hawaii Palm Properties owner said.
Holly and Eila Algood own the building.
The EV Stations Hawaii app shows 22 charging locations across the island with none located in North Hawaii. The closest one to North Hawaii is at Mauna Kea Resort, and in East Hawaii, the closest is in Hilo.
