HONOLULU (AP) — In high-cost Hawaii, progressive groups are pushing for various tax credits this year. Several bills dealing with tax relief for families and homeowners are on the agenda at the Hawaii Legislature next week.
Lawmakers on Tuesday are considering an earned income tax credit for working families.
The tax credit already exists on the federal level, and in 2014, more than 100,000 people in Hawaii received a federal earned income tax credit. They got about $2,200 per household.
The bill would create a state-level earned income tax credit equal to 10 percent of the federal tax credit. Supporters are hoping to put more money in the pockets of low-income residents.
But the Tax Foundation of Hawaii says administering the program will cost the state too much money.
