HONOLULU (AP) — Maui firefighters have contained 40 percent of a brush fire on the south side of Haleakala volcano.
Maui County Fire and Public Safety spokesman Ed Taomoto said Wednesday officials revised down the burned area to 5,300 acres after using more accurate GPS mapping. Earlier they estimated the blaze had scorched 5,500 acres.
The flames are burning brush and pasture land in a rural part of Maui.
Taomoto says five private helicopters and one Hawaii Air National Guard helicopter dropped water from the air to keep the fire from spreading further upslope.
They also supported the work of eight bulldozers cutting firebreaks on the ground.
Several Maui ranches, a construction company and a wind energy company are helping county, state and federal workers fight the fire.
