Kiwanis to learn about youth mentoring

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive.

A speaker from Kealakehe High School will discuss “Life Plan,” a youth mentoring program that pairs volunteers with classrooms of high school students. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

Aha Aloha Aina meetings planned

Native Hawaiians will be holding public meetings in February to discuss their political status as a people and as an occupied nation.

The West Hawaii meetings will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kanu O Ka Aina New Century Public Charter School, Hale Puke in Waimea and from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at West Hawaii Civic Center in the Community Hale.

The Aha Aloha Aina came out of the Halawai Aloha Aina informational community meetings that were held statewide in October and November, see www.protestnaiaupuni.com for more information.

Hilo Trap and Skeet Range closing temporarily

The Department of Parks and Recreation will close the Hilo Trap and Skeet Range starting Wednesday for the installation of a new waste disposal system and accessibility upgrades. The range is expected to remain closed through August.

Senior ID cards issued

Senior ID cards will be issued from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B and from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency awarded

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has been awarded for its Hawaii Hazards Awareness and Resilience Program. The goal of the program is to enhance community resilience following earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes and floods through outreach, education and providing resources.

The award was announced by the Western States Seismic Policy Council board of directors. The national awards are presented every four years and recognize organizations and agencies for their achievements as demonstrated through programs, projects, and products that address earthquake risk reduction within the United States. The awards will be presented on May 5 in California.

Edible landscaping class offered

Zach Mermel will offer “Ecological Land Care: Edible Landscaping for Backyards and Beyond” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at Volcano Art Center. There will be a break for lunch.

Attendees will learn the fundamental landscaping dos and don’ts and interact with a wide range of useful, easy-to-grow edibles. Participants will get to take home a number of edible plants.

Cost is $40, or $30 for Volcano Art Center members, plus a $15 materials fee.
