Two men were injured in surf Friday afternoon at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.
The men, both age 50, apparently went over the falls of a wave and suffered neck injuries about 1:45 p.m., Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros said. They were transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital for care.
A high surf advisory was posted for north-facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Forecasters called for 12- to 16-foot waves during the afternoon hours. According to the National Weather Service, county lifeguards reported at 10 a.m. 3- to 5-foot waves at the South Kohala beach park.
