Local artist Leilani Pacheco-Datta has been waiting six years, to hear that the 31st Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau “Eddie Will Go” event will be happening. Though canceled Wednesday, there remains the chance the big wave competition could be scheduled through Feb. 29 at Waimea Bay on Oahu.
To honor the local legend, Pacheco-Datta will be donating proceeds from her art to his charitable foundation, the Eddie Aikau Foundation. The foundation was created to Aikau’s life, contributions and accomplishments while promoting education and the advancement of Hawaiian culture.
“Eddie was a Hawaiian hero to all of us, and ironically, I just finished two pieces a few months before the announcement, as a tribute to him,” she said. “Being part-Hawaiian, born and raised here in Kona, I felt that I had to honor him in some way.”
Both pieces were created in his honor by burning an image onto glass and then working stained glass around the image. The large piece, which features an image of Aikau framed in stained glass, measures 16-by-23 and is priced at $800. The smaller piece, which features an image of Aikau, a handmade glass maile lei on a koa base, is $250.
