HONAUNAU — Politicians, cowboys, county department heads and ranchers came together Friday afternoon for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Honaunau Rodeo Arena.
The $5.1 million renovation project was spearheaded by South Kona Councilwoman Maile Medeiros David, who thanked supporters for “giving life to this arena for generations to come.”
Longtime veterinarian and paniolo Dr. Billy Bergin provided a rich history of the arena, including the fact that in its 50-year history, there has not been a single broken bone suffered by a rider. The ceremony culminated with a Hawaiian blessing by Kahu Brian Boshard and the ceremonial turning of the earth with an Oo.
The improvements, which include new bleachers, judging stands, ADA bathrooms, improved vehicular access and expanded parking, are expected to be complete by the end of the year.
