MINX — the all-women swing and jazz band — reunite Saturday at the Hilo Elks Lodge. The show starts at 8 p.m.; tickets are $10 at the door.
MINX features Leslie Harlib on keyboard and vocals; Robin Jensen on woodwinds; vocalist Lou Ann Gurney; and bassist Diana Webb. They will be joined by guest drummer, Sean Kenny. Guitarist and singer Hal Glatzer will sit in for a few songs, as well.
The Hilo Hep Cats will offer a Swing dance lesson (to recorded music) from 7 to 7:45 p.m. A $15 ticket, purchased during that time, covers both the lesson and the MINX gig that follows.
MINX was formed in March to play for a dance at the Palace Theater that followed the screening of the documentary film “Lady Be Good – Instrumental Women in Jazz.” Harlib is a longtime piano-bar entertainer who has performed on many of Hilo’s annual Black & White Nights, both as a soloist and in small combos. Gurney is the vocalist for several local bands, including Jazz Mele and Gone Country. Jensen is the woodwind player in Jazz Mele, and is renowned as one of the Big Island’s most talented saxophonists. Webb plays bass with several local bands, including Smack Dab and Jazztones.
The lodge is located at 150 Kinoole Street; there is a large parking lot behind the building, off Ululani Street.
