KAILUA-KONA — A trip to Hawaii landed a South Korean man in jail on suspicion of attempted murder and family abuse after a fight when the suspect discovered another man in the room with his female acquaintance.

Police responded to a call of a domestic dispute and possible stabbing at 8:12 a.m. Wednesday at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. When they arrived they found Hawaii Fire Department personnel taking a 52-year-old South Korean man to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment on puncture wounds to his chest and thigh.

Police said the suspect, Kyoung Sun Yoo, 59, of Yuseong Gu, South Korea, had “confronted the victim while he was in the room with a woman known to the suspect.”

He was arrested at the scene, although there was a diversion to North Hawaii Community Hospital to treat injuries on his left hand. He was then taken to the Kona cellblock while police continued the investigation.

A 52-year-old South Korean woman was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated for a head injury and then released. Police did not specify the relationship between the people.

The male victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

“We can’t really comment on an incident involving one of our guests that is still under investigation,” said Vicky Kometani, public relations director for the South Kohala hotel.
