HCC: Couch to Bike Yes You Can
Hawaii Cycling Club and HP Bike Works, Coffee Talk Riders and PATH (People’s Advocacy for Trails Hawaii) are sponsoring the “Couch to Century Ride — Yes You Can,” a free 10 week training program for beginning and intermediate cyclists interested in riding one of the three distances (100, 60 or 30 miles) in the Hawaii Cycling Club’s Hawaii Century on April 3rd.
The first “Couch to Ride – Yes You Can” training session will be Jan. 30. Each training session will start at 7 a.m. at the Kona swimming pool and end at Bike Works for cold drinks and a brief lecture and Q&A meeting.
The objective of Couch to Ride, per event coordinator, Toni Romp-Friesen, is to install confidence in a cyclist so that he or she can safely and comfortably enjoy riding their chosen distance. Anyone is welcome to join and cyclists are not obligated to complete the entire series.
Each Saturday, group leaders will accompany cyclists on rides from 10 to 23 miles, initially, gradually increasing mileage depending on a rider’s goals, experience and fitness level. The group leaders will offer training tips on efficient and comfortable riding, safety, group riding skills, pacing, nutrition and hydration, increasing distances and avoiding exhaustion.
The group leaders will be Franz Weber, Paul Burke, both League Certified Instructors and PATH bike education instructors and Dee Fraser, a USAT certified triathlon coach.
This program would also benefit athletes training for the Waikoloa Lavaman Triathlon on April 10 and the Coffee Talk Riders “Tour de Big Island”, scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend.
