A 54-year-old woman was injured Saturday after following off a trail at Kilauea Iki.
The woman was walking with her daughter across the floor of the crater around 1:50 p.m. She went about 50 feet off the trail and lost her footing on some rocks, the fire department said in a press release.
“She flipped backwards, striking her head and back,” the release said. She had cuts and abrasions to all her limbs.
She was initially treated by National Park Service Rangers until a Hawaii County helicopter was able to lift her out of the area. Ultimately she was taken, by ambulance, to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance in stable condition.
The floor of Kilauea Iki is a cooled lava lake, with multiple steam vents and several rocky regions. It has a four-mile trail that loops through the area.
