Firefighters worked Thursday to extinguish a brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in the vicinity of Hawaii Community College — Palamanui.
The size of the fire, which ignited about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday mauka of Kamanu Street, north Kaiminani Drive, was listed at about 170 acres Thursday morning, said Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Gerald Kosaki. It had been estimated at about 200 acres on Wednesday, however, fire officials determined the burn area was in fact smaller.
Firefighters were to at the scene throughout the night, working to quash hot spots.
No structures were damaged, however, two utility poles were burned. Kosaki said there were no interruptions to power, however.
Kamanu Street, also being referred to as Ane Keohokalole Highway, which accesses the college campus was open Thursday. The campus is also open, however, the public is advised to use caution while driving in the area because firefighters and equipment may be present.
