KHS fundraising campaign for donkey almost over
The Kona Historical Society launched its first-ever crowdfunding campaign in December — Charlie Needs A Bestie — on Razoo.com for a 25-year-old donkey, who needs an upgraded home and a friend.
For more than a decade, Charlie has captured the hearts of those who visit the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook. Charlie helps tell the story of the Kona Nightingales, donkeys that were used as transportation, ideal for hauling coffee, shared between farmers and famous for their braying.
Donkeys are herd animals, which is why the Kona Historical Society wants to adopt or rescue a friend for Charlie.
But before Charlie can have a companion, Kona Historical Society needs to make improvements to the pasture, from clearing land overgrown with invasive weeds and plants to installing new fencing and fixing the manger. Kona Historical Society hopes to raise at least $15,500 for this project and the deadline, Jan. 31, is approaching fast. Documentaries shown at North Kohala library
North Kohala Public Library will present a series of three documentary films in January, February, and March in a collaboration with POV, the award-winning independent nonfiction film series on PBS.
The first of the three films, “Web Junkie” will show at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Internet addiction has been declared a national health crisis in China, the first country in the world to classify this evolving diagnosis. Web Junkie follows the treatment of three Chinese teenagers, obsessive gamers whose preference for the virtual world over the real one is summed up in one jarring statement: “Reality is too fake.”
The second film, “Tea Time” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 29. The series concludes with “The Beats of the Antonou” at 6:30 March 28.

Blue Zones Project plans tobacco policy meeting
A Blue Zones Project Hawaii tobacco policy meeting is planned from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at North Hawaii Education and Research Center, 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa.
The Blue Zones Project is working with North and East Hawaii communities to improve the health and well-being of residents through social, environmental, and policy changes.
