Tony Trischka, a world-renowned five-string banjo player, will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hilo.
Trischka was among the first to take the instrument from bluegrass into jazz, and create original compositions for it in new genres of music. In 2007, the International Bluegrass Music Association named him Banjo Player of the Year; he was also nominated for a Grammy Award that year. In 2011, he was musical director and co-producer of the PBS documentary “Give Me the Banjo.” In addition, he produced Steve Martin’s Grammy-nominated “Rare Bird Alert” album, which features performances by Paul McCartney, the Dixie Chicks and the Steep Canyon Rangers.
Trischka will perform at the East Hawaii Cultural Center/Museum of Modern Art at 141 Kalakaua St. Tickets are $10 at the door.
