This month’s selection is “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. Set mostly in Germany and France before and during World War II, the book focuses on the lives of two characters: Marie Laure, a blind 14-year-old French girl who flees the countryside when her father disappears from Nazi-occupied Paris, and Werner, a gadget-obsessed German orphan whose skills admit him to a brutal branch of Hitler Youth. The two serve as powerful examples of the way average people in trying times must decide daily between morality and survival.
The club will next meet in February to discuss “The Martian” by Andy Weir.
