A high surf advisory has been extended for Big Island shores through early Friday, National Weather Service forecasters say.

Surf heights of 6 to 10 feet are expected along west-facing shores of the Kona and Kohala coasts, from Upolu Point to South Point, including Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, through 6 a.m. Friday, forecasters said. Along north-facing shores of the island’s northern and eastern coasts, wave heights of 12 to 18 feet are forecast from Upolu Point to Cape Kumukahi in Puna.

Surf was forecast gradually drop Friday, forecasters said.

A second large west-northwest swell is likely to arrive Sunday, resulting in high surf along west-facing shores of the Big Island into early next week. Forecasters noted that the Big Island may see a high surf warning posted.

Forecasters categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” cautioning of strong breaking waves, shore break and longshore and rip currents. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.
