A 19-year-old woman nearly drowned near the End of the World in Keauhou, the Hawaii Fire Department reports.
A group of young adults were sitting in a tidepool when a large wave enveloped the group, fire officials said. Two 19-year-olds, a man and woman, were pulled across the rocky shoreline and into the high surf. The man managed to get back to shore, while the woman ended about 150 yards offshore, where she began to tread water. She was spotted by rescue crews and two rescuers were placed by helicopter into the water to assist her, the release said. They waited until a pick up by a passing tour boat.
Both patients were taken to to Kona Community Hospital.
“End of the World is a popular but dangerous cliff jumping area that swimmers frequent. On days with large waves, the area is very dangerous due to limited areas to exit the ocean,” the release said.
