As many as five of the confirmed cases of dengue fever on the Big Island remain potentially infectious to mosquitoes, the state Department of Health reported Friday.
Five new cases of the fever were confirmed on the island, bringing the total confirmed case count to 223, health officials said. The last onset of illness was Jan. 8.
Of the 223 cases, 201 are Hawaii Island residents and 22 are visitors; forty-two have been children.
As of Friday, 893 reported potential cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.
The Waipio Valley area, and Hookena and Milolii beach parks remained closed to the public Friday, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
