Two additional cases of dengue fever were confirmed on the Big Island Thursday, bringing the total case count to 218, state health officials said.

Two additional cases of dengue fever were confirmed on the Big Island Thursday, bringing the total case count to 218, state health officials said.

Of the 218 confirmed cases, 197 are Big Island residents and 21 are visitors, according to the Department of Health. Forty-one have been children.

As many as two of the confirmed cases remain potentially infectious to mosquitoes. Dengue fever is a viral illness spread through the bite of mosquitoes.

Since the start of the outbreak, 893 reported potential cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.
