KAILUA, Oahu (AP) — A 59-year-old man is dead and his stepson is injured after a passing boat’s propeller struck the younger man while the two were diving in an area off Lanikai Beach.

The stepson was struck Saturday afternoon and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported the Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel searched for the 59-year-old, whose body was found about two hours later.

EMS Spokeswoman Shayne Enright said family members described the 59-year-old as an experienced free diver.

Hawaii News Now reported the body was about 200 feet north of the men’s kayak. The two had anchored a boat in an area about 300 meters offshore.

It’s unclear whether the man was also hit by the boat. An autopsy is planned.
