Project updates planned at Alliance for a Sustainable Ahupuaa meeting

Laiopua 2020, Villages of Laiopua Association, County of Hawaii, Forest City Hawaii and regional stakeholders will hold the eighth annual “Alliance for a Sustainable Ahupuaa” Kealakehe and Keahuolu informational meeting to review the regional development and planning initiatives.

The meeting is planned from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served.

Line dancing classes planned

A fun way to exercise both body and brain is line dancing. Beginning line dance classes will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. and classes for those with more experience will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through March 3 at Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road.

Cost for the eight-week session is $35, or $7 to drop-in for one class. For both hours, the fee is $49 for the session, or $9 for one night.

Participants should bring water and wear comfortable clothing and shoes, preferably no brand new athletic shoes. All ages are welcome and children under 12 may attend free of charge.

No preregistration needed, come a little early to sign in.

Alzheimer’s topic for two lectures

The Alzheimer’s Association presents two lectures, “What Is Dementia?” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia” on Jan. 23 at Tutu’s House in Waimea; There will also be a movie shown.

“What Is Dementia?” is a workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. The 9 a.m. presentation includes short videos of individuals with the disease, family members of individuals with dementia and various professionals.

At 11 a.m., Chris Ridley, Alzheimer’s Association program coordinator, will show the movie “Still Alice.” The movie has actress Julianne Moore as Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking and inspiring.

At 1 p.m., the topic will be “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia.” This workshop covers information on possible causes and types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions.

Book sale planned at Kailua-Kona library

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Proceeds help support the needs of the Kona libraries.

Volunteers are welcome and book donations are accepted at the library.
