“Les Pecheurs de Perles,” the first Live in HD Metropolitan Opera of 2016, will be shown Jan. 16 and 20 at Regal Cinemas Makalapua in Kailua-Kona.

Leila is torn between her vows to pray for the safety of the poor fishermen and her love for Nadir. Nadir and Zurga are torn between their love for Leila and their vow to give her up to preserve their deep friendship. Bizet must have known what that feels like to have composed “Au fond du temple saint,” one of the most glorious duets ever sung by tenor and baritone.

An opera too rarely seen but now gloriously performed, “Les Pecheurs de Perles” (“The Pearl Fishers”) is the first Live in HD Metropolitan Opera of the New Year. It is sung in French with English subtitles. The first showing is 12:55 p.m. Jan. 16 with an encore presentation at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20. Admission is $24; $22 for seniors.

Coming up this Live in HD season are “Turandot” on Jan. 30, “Manon Lescaut” on March 5, “Madama Butterfly” April 2, “Roberto Devereux” on April 16 and “Elektra” on April 20.
