An additional five cases of dengue fever were confirmed on the Big Island bringing the total case count to 207, health officials said Wednesday afternoon.

Of the confirmed cases, 187 are Hawaii Island residents and 20 are visitors. Thirty-nine have been children.

The state Department of Health said six of the confirmed cases remain potentially infectious to mosquitoes. The last onset of illness occurred Dec. 31.

Since the end of October, when state health officials first said they were investigating two possible cases of the virus, 805 suspect cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.

Meanwhile, Hookena and Milolii beach parks remain closed because of the outbreak.

To report mosquito concerns, contact 322-4880 in West Hawaii and 974-6001 in East Hawaii.
