Drug use prevention class offered

The North Kohala Public Library will host “Parenting for Prevention” at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Chris Kelly, founder of Prevention PLUS will offer information about parenting drug-free kids in a drug-filled world.

This program is for parents, foster parents, guardians, family members, teachers, administrators, coaches and counselors of all children from elementary school to college age — not just those who are using drugs. It will provide practical information about trends in teenage substance use and abuse. Attendees will learn how to deter experimentation and how to detect and react if use does occur. Kelly will present the most up-to-date, science-based information to encourage healthy, sensible choices.

Kelly has been a substance abuse specialist for more than 20 years.

January Book Clubs

Kona Stories bookstore in Keauhou Shopping Center offers several book clubs this month. The groups are free if books are purchased from Kona Stories, otherwise, a $5 donation is appreciated. Attendees should bring a drink or pupu to share.

The fiction group will discuss “A Man called Ove” by Fredrik Backman at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The travel group will review “Valleys of the Assassins” by Freya Stark at 6:30 p.m Jan. 19. Finally, the nonfiction book group will talk about “The Path between the Seas” by David McCullough at 6 p.m. Jan. 26.

Meeting to address Kukuihaele Park improvements

The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a public meeting to present a proposed project to improve Kukuihaele Park, which is in the village of Kukuihaele about a mile from the Waipio Valley Lookout.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center, 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa.

The department will present an overview of the proposed park improvements, respond to questions, address concerns and receive input on project scope and proposed impacts from all persons interested in this project.

Classical music program offered at library

Roland Maurer, alias Ohrlando, and his wife, Ursula Hesse will offer a colorful Bouquet of Salon Musique from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

With Maurer on oboe, bassoon, and saxophone and Hesse on piano, the duo will perform a classical program of waltzes, polkas, dances and opera fantasies. Attendees may dance or simply move their legs to the European Salon tunes of the 19th and 20th century.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, this program is free to the public.

Deadline approaching for Toyota art contest

Entries for Toyota’s Dream Car art contest are due Jan. 15.

Entry forms and rules are available at ToyotaHawaii.com and at Toyota Hawaii dealerships. Entrants 15 years old and younger must create original, hand-drawn illustrations of their dream car and submit it via mail or to a Toyota Hawaii dealer by the deadline. Contest finalists will receive an iPad Mini 4 or cash prize, and will be submitted to the World Competition, where they could be selected to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan to attend the final awards ceremony this summer.

All eligible artwork will be entered into the People’s Choice Competition, where family, friends, and fans of the Toyota Hawaii Facebook page will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite entries from Feb. 15-28. Fans are encouraged to vote daily. The artwork with the most votes in each age category at the end of the competition will be entered for final judging in the local competition. In addition, the entrant with the most votes in each age category for the People’s Choice Competition will receive $100 cash.

North Hawaii Hospice lists programs

North Hawaii Hospice will conduct two events in January at its site at 65-1328 Kawaihae Road in Waimea.

The Circle of Support Grief Group meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Expressive Arts, Mandalas — Grief and Healing, meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 13.
