Ignition interlock permit holders are now required to have their permit and a valid State of Hawaii identification card in their possession while operating a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device.
In addition, the new law, Act 40, allows for a person whose license was revoked for driving under the influence of an intoxicant to apply for re-licensing 30 days before the end of the revocation period, as long as the license is not issued prior to completion of the revocation period.
The new law goes into effect on Jan. 1.
Penalty for a first-time offender is three to 30 days in jail, a fine of $250 to $,1000, license revocation for an additional year and loss of privilege to operate a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device. Imprisonment, fines and revocation periods increase with additional infractions within a five-year period.
State of Hawaii ID cards may be obtained in person in Hilo at 349 Kapiolani St. or in Kailua-Kona at the West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway. Applicants must present documentary proof of legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, legal presence and proof of principal residence address.
