The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is holding an art contest for its 2016-17 Hawaii Wildlife Conservation and Game Bird stamps.
The Division of Forestry and Wildlife is seeking entries depicting a game mammal and game bird for the stamps. The conservation stamp is required on the state hunting licenses, and the game bird hunting stamp is required for those intending to hunt game birds. Both stamps (differing slightly in text) will be available for purchase by wildlife stamp collectors.
The winner will receive a maximum award of $1,000.
Subjects for this year’s stamps are the Axis deer and black francolin.
The Axis deer, Axis axis, are smaller in size than white-tailed deer found in the continental U.S. The deer arrived in Hawaii in the 1860s as a gift from Hong Kong to King Kamehameha V.
The black francolin, Francolinus francolinus, was introduced as a game bird to the Hawaiian Islands, and is found on all the main islands except Lanai. The francolin is commonly found in thick vegetation, brushy areas and tall grasslands; generally near water.
