Awa leads the way for Lady Cougars over Kansas

Led by Konawaena alumnus Dawnyelle Awa, the Washington State women’s basketball team defeated Kansas 66-53 on Sunday evening.

The Cougars (9-2) shot .563 (9-of-16) from beyond the arc against the Jayhawks (5-5), including a perfect 3-of-3 by Awa. Awa scored a career-high 19 points to lead all scorers at historic Allen Fieldhouse. She tallied her previous career high earlier this year against Hawaii on Oahu.

In 11 games this season, Awa is averaging 7.9 points while hitting on 53 percent of her shots. She also leads her team in assists (33) and steals (27).

Kai Opua Canoe Club Seeks Coaches

Kai Opua Canoe Club intends to enter all 40 outrigger canoe racing divisions at each 2016 regatta and the Big Island Championship, and the State Championship, which will be held this year on Oahu. We are seeking applicants for the positions of Men’s and Women’s Coaches, 18 Year-old and Under Division Coaches and for the Assistant Coaches positions.

First Tee Hawaii

The First Tee Hawaii Program will start a new session at Big Island Country Club and Makalei Hawaii Golf Course on Jan. 10 the program starts at Big Island Country Club at 2:30 p.m. Participants are asked to register by 2:15 p.m. at the driving range area. Registration fee for this session (Jan. 10 to March 14) is $25 per person.

On Jan. 11 the program starts up at Makalei Hawaii Golf Course at 3:00 p.m. Registration is from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. All players should be registered by 2:30 to catch a ride to the driving range. A registration fee of $25 covers from Jan. 11 to March 15.

The program is one hour. Ages are from 7-18 years old. Clubs are provided for beginners.

Horseshoe club to start 1st league play

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will begin its first league play of 2016 on Jan. 7 at the Kona Palms Courts horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

Membership is required for this approximately eight to ten week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Handicap scoring is used enabling players of all levels to participate. League play is from 4-6 p.m. Thursdays with a weekly fee of $5.

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club offers free informal play from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays at Kona Palms Courts. Also, come down to the horseshoe pits on Thursday evenings (4-6 p.m.) to meet some of the players. Pitchers of all levels are welcome.
