The Kohala Plein Air artists and Kahilu Theatre recently announced the winners of this year’s Big Island Plein Air Art Show, which wraps up Tuesday.
Best in Show for oils went to Jeannie Garcia for her piece “Calm and Quiet.” Watercolor Best in Show was awarded to Robert Appleman for “It’s Time to Paddle.” Alaina deHavilland earned Best in Show for pastels for “Pololu.” Honorable mentions were given to Peter Jefferson and Richard Rochkovsky. The juried exposition was lead by Tim Bostock, Mollie Hustace and Debbie Goodwin.
The work of the 33 plein air artists, artists who paint in the “open air” rather than a studio, will be featured through Tuesday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. This juried show is a fundraiser for the Kahilu Theatre, with 20 percent of all art sales directly benefiting the theater.
Artist demonstrations, which are open to the public, also continue through Tuesday. On Saturday, from 3 to 5 p.m., Ginger Sandell and Stan Chraminski (oils) and Richard Rochkovsky (acrylic) will be present. From 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, preceding West Hawaii Dance Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” performance, Greg Schultz (watercolor) will offer demonstrations. And, from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Peter Jefferson (oils) will be present at the theater.
