The Parker School speech and debate team returned home from the Nov. 27-28 Kamehameha School’s Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament on Oahu with the school’s first-ever overall sweepstakes trophy. Parker placed first in the combined speech and debate sweepstakes category amongst a field of 17 schools, including teams from Canada and California.
The Parker School speech and debate team returned home from the Nov. 27-28 Kamehameha School’s Qualifying Speech and Debate Tournament on Oahu with the school’s first-ever overall sweepstakes trophy. Parker placed first in the combined speech and debate sweepstakes category amongst a field of 17 schools, including teams from Canada and California.
In addition, Parker speech and debate team won the debate sweepstakes trophy and two freshmen, Malia Dills and Emily Fetsch, placed first in JV policy debate.
Twenty-four Parker students competed in this two-day invitational tournament, which served as a qualifying competition for the Hawaii State Speech and Debate Championship competition held each February. The following eight students qualified automatically, earning a spot in this year’s state tournament: Malia Dills and Emily Fetsch in JV policy debate; Sivan Najita in Lincoln Douglas debate; Mathias Migliorini-Marchesi and Zach Gooding in advanced public forum debate; Shen MacKenzie and Eitan Machala in beginning public form debate; and Mathew Bal, Parker’s speech team caption, qualified in the oratory and impromptu speaking categories.
The Parker speech and debate team will compete next at the Neighbor Island Speech and Debate Qualifying Tournament hosted by Parker School Jan. 15-16. The community is invited to attend.
