LavaKids Family Fun Runs

LavaKids will host it’s Family Fun Runs on Saturday at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Hwy. Just look for the LavaMan flags on the side of the road. This is a free event and open to the public.

The guest speaker this month will be Eddie-O Ombac, BioAstin representative and local radio announcer. Ombac will speak of his journey with running and where it has taken him.

Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m. The one-mile run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. with the 5k run/walk right after. This event is open to both keiki and adults. Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

11th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run

Hawaii Sport Events presents the 11th Annual Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday. The Christmas themed event will feature a 5K, 1-Mile and Santa’s Keiki Dash Runs starting at 7:30 a.m. in front of Coconut Grove Marketplace. Awards to be given out to top three in each category: Overall, 10-year age groups, and best Christmas costumes with lots of raffle prizes to follow. Entry fee for the 5K is $35 until Friday. Fee for the 1-Mile is $15 until Saturday. Late registration and packet pickup will occur on Dec. 19 at Coconut Grove Marketplace from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no registration for 5K and 1-Mile on race day.

This year’s charity recipient goes to Family Support Hawaii’s “Christmas For The Children” program. Race applications available at Big Island Running Company with on-line registration happening on the event website: Kona5K.com. For more information or to volunteer email info@hawaiisportevents.com.

First Tee Hawaii

The First Tee Hawaii Program will start a new session at Big Island Country Club and Makalei Hawaii Golf Course on Jan. 10 the program starts at Big Island Country Club at 2:30 p.m. Participants are asked to register by 2:15 p.m. at the driving range area. Registration fee for this session (Jan. 10 to March 14) is $25 per person.

On Jan. 11 the program starts up at Makalei Hawaii Golf Course at 3:00 p.m. Registration is from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. All players should be registered by 2:30 to catch a ride to the driving range. A registration fee of $25 covers from Jan. 11 to March 15.

The program is one hour. Ages are from 7-18 years old. Some areas of the First Tee program covers “Respect for Myself,”

“Respect for Others,” and “Respect for My Surroundings.” Clubs are provided for beginners.

Fed Cup tickets on sale

Tickets for the 2016 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round in Kailua-Kona between the United States and Poland are currently on sale.

Tickets may be purchased by visiting www.usta.com/fedcup or by calling 888-334-USTA (8782).

The best-of-five match series between the U.S. and Poland will be played at Holua Tennis Center at Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Feb. 6-7, on an outdoor hard court.

Play begins on Feb. 6, at 11 a.m., with two singles matches. On Sunday, play starts at 10 a.m. with two reverse singles matches and the doubles match. A revised schedule for Sunday may take place if a team clinches in the third or fourth match.

J.R. De Groote, West Hawaii Today Sports Editor, reflects on the high level of play in BIIF and scholarships already awarded. He looks back at the Konawaena Wildcats football and girl’s volleyball championship season and the current state champion Wildcats girls’ basketball team, HPA girls soccer and other schools in BIIF and the paper’s coverage.

DeGroote talks about how growing up playing sports in Kona including a high level of in line hockey and his love of sports contributed to him pursuing journalism. He has some information on the pickup hockey games at Makeo Community Park every Wednesday & Friday.
