Gerald Lucena, a regular designer of sets, props and costumes for Aloha Performing Arts Company, will lead a six-day winter workshop inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic story “Where the Wild Things Are” for children ages 8 to 12.
The workshop, which is limited to a dozen students, will be held at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 21-23 and 28-30. Tuition, which includes all materials needed for the workshop, is $175. Students will need to bring a lunch each day; afternoon snack will be provided.
Students will create their own unique “wild thing” puppet using simple materials such as recycled fabric, plaster cloth, dowels and glue while focusing on form, texture, facial expression and costumes, as well as character movement and voice experimentation. Puppet possibilities include Hawaiian animals such as the puaa (pig), pueo (owl), io (hawk), among others. Students will have an opportunity to perform with their creations on the last day of the workshop.
Lucena was recently presented the “Luna” award for his service and dedication to APAC. He received his degree in fine arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and also attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and Anderson Ranch Art Center in Colorado. He currently is a regular instructor at Donkey Mill Art Center.
