Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Monday, marking the anniversary of the Japanese aerial assault on the U.S. naval base in Hawaii in 1941, which killed 2,402 and led to the U.S. and the UK declaring war on Japan the next day. A total of 350 Japanese aircraft flew from six naval carriers positioned offshore and destroyed a large part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. A Presidential Proclamation encourages Americans to observe the ‘solemn day of remembrance’ and to honor military – past and present – with appropriate ceremonies and activities. It also urges federal agencies and interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff in honor of those who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor. Commemorative events include wreath laying ceremony at the Navy Memorial, Washington, D.C.
