Police are investigating an assault stemming from a confrontation Wednesday in Hilo.

At about 3:32 p.m. Wednesday, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an affray at the parking lot of Walmart on Makaala Street. Responding officers discovered a 32-year-old who was being restrained by other individuals. Thirty-two-year-old David James Nall, who has no permanent address, was initially arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police later located a 34-year-old Hilo man, who reported that he and an unknown man, later identified as Nall, had been in a physical confrontation and that the unknown man had used a knife to assault him. The victim left the scene and went by private vehicle to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of lacerations to his head, which were not life threatening, police said.

As a result, police added the additional offenses of second-degree assault, second-degree terroristic threatening, and fourth-degree criminal property damage. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.
