An Ainako Avenue home in Hilo was damaged after a Thursday night fire.

An Ainako Avenue home in Hilo was damaged after a Thursday night fire.

Firefighters were called at 9:08 p.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Ainako Avenue. When they arrived at 9:12 a.m., firefighters found heavy smoke and flames exiting two bedroom windows located at the rear northeast corner of the residence, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The three occupants, a 32-year-old woman and two children, has escaped the blaze and taken refuge at a neighbor’s house.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire at 9:15 p.m., limiting it to the rear bedrooms. The fire was extinguished at 9:30 p.m, with a loss estimated at $250,000.

The owner told Capt. David Minor of the Kaumana fire station that the blaze may have started from unattended citronella candles burning to prevent mosquitoes. The cause is still under investigation, however.

The last of the 11 firefighters and four vehicles involved were back in quarters by 10:46 p.m.
