Libraries host holiday programs

Visitors to Kailua-Kona Public Library may vote for their favorite Hawaii Island themed Christmas ornaments through Dec. 12. One vote is allowed for each age category per day. The ornament with the most votes in each category will win a $10 gift card. Info: 327-4327.

Also, Kealakekua Public Library will offer craft classes. At 11 a.m. Saturday, Joan Bovee will guide participants in making Christmas boxes that can be used for packaging presents. The class is for those age 7 and older and is limited to 15 participants. Kealakekua Public Library will also hold “Paper Cutting: Holiday Centerpieces” at 11 a.m Dec. 12. Michelle Kenney will teach adults how to create three-dimensional paper ornaments for table centerpieces using scissors and X-Acto knives. Info: 323-7585.

Marine debris seminar planned

A symposium on marine and tsunami debris will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Mokupapapa Discovery Center in Hilo. Doors open at 5:30.

Attendees to the free event will learn about local marine debris, the status of Japanese tsunami marine debris, and what they can do to prevent marine debris. The evening includes a speech by Walter Dudley and presentations by cleanup coordinators from Hawaii, Canada, Japan and Washington. Light pupu and drinks will be served. Attendees should bring their own bottle.

Buddhist class scheduled Sunday

Buddha taught that the direct cause of wealth is generosity. A free class on giving is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus. Donations to Volcano Art Center are accepted. No experience is necessary. Those attending should dress warmly.

A Sangha holiday dessert potluck follows. Sangha is one of the Three Jewels, and is an important Buddhist bond to cultivate. Without sangha the dharma teachings would be lost.

Feast on the Beach fundraiser slated

The third annual Feast on the Beach fundraiser will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Dec. 11 at Lava Lava Beach Club in Waikoloa Beach Resort. The event will benefit Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii.

Entertainment will be provided by LT Smooth and Henry Kapono and his band.

Food, beer and wine stations are included. Cost is $125 to stand, dance and dine plus tax, or $1,400 for a reserved table of 8.
