Hawaii Cycling Club hosts Kohala Kona Coffee Climb
All cyclists are invited to join Hawaii Cycling Club on Dec. 6 for some great Kona coffee and a fun time trial — or just a somewhat hilly ride — as HCC unleashes the inaugural Kohala Kona Coffee Climb.
It’s the last of HCC’s 2015 events, and it can be a ride or a time trial, with untimed riders heading out 10 minutes before 8 a.m., or after the last time trial entrant leaves.
It all starts just east of Hawi town with registration on Waipiele St. (approximately 0.2 miles east of the center of Hawi). This is makai of the start line on Hwy 270. Sign in begins at 7:30 am. The time trial starts at 8 a.m. and will finish 14.4 miles later at the 3564-foot elevation sign at the summit of Kohala Mountain Road.
Like all HCC events, this is free to HCC members. Non-members can sign up at registration for a one-day membership.
The course heads east from Hawi, then turns up Kynnersley Road which joins Kohala Mountain Road above Hawi and goes all the way to the summit. Alternating sections of climbing and “false flats” make this a great ride, and the scenery can’t be beat.
There will be nutritional support at the talk story/aid station at the summit so it is reccomended to can carry only what you need going up.
There is limited parking east of Hawi on Waipiele St., so parking at the start will be restricted to volunteers and volunteers car-pooling with participants. All other riders are asked not to park on Waipiele St., which needs to be free of vehicles after the start. Ample parking will be found in Hawi or nearby.
Visit hawaiicyclingclub.com for information on HCC events, sponsors and much, much more.
