WAIMEA — It was an eventful day at the 44th annual Ka Makani Classic on Sunday.
On the girls side, Punahou defeated two-time defending Division II state champion Ka Makani 3-1 for the tournament title. Shay Nakahira, True Dydasco and Kaylyn Fukuji tallied goal for the Buffanblu. Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor had the lone score for Ka Makani, finding the back of the net early in the second half.
The Punahou girls outscored opponents 13-1 on the way to the preseason tourney title.
Meanwhile, the Hawaii Prep boys tallied a statement preseason win, knocking off BIIF powerhouse Kealakehe 2-1 in overtime. The Waveriders — who have claimed four consecutive BIIF titles — had not lost to a league foe in three years.
Zen Simone got Ka Makani on the board with a goal in the first half, but returning BIIF Division I Player of the Year Laukoa Santos sent the game to overtime, scoring on a penalty kick midway through the second half.
It didn’t take long for Hawaii Prep to score in the overtime period. Austin Schneider scored one minute into the extra period to send Hawaii Prep to the valuable victory.
