The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the temblor, which struck at 8:15 p.m., was centered 3.6 miles south of the Mauna Loa summit and 17.4 miles north-northwest of Pahala. It had a registered depth of 1.6 miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an advisory following the earthquake.
