A man went to the hospital after the van he was driving went off the road and rolled about 3 p.m. south of the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Hale Makai Road in Kailua-Kona.

The driver was in the mauka lane when he went off the road, missing the guardrail by several yards. The van went off the raised section alongside the road, flattening a bush before going into a large depression in the ground.

It came to rest on its passenger side. Several passing drivers and several police officers stabilized the van, and firefighters added wooden chocks and supports. This was intended to prevent additional injury to the driver, who had to be taken out through the rear.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
